Cole Palen's Albatros

Looking at the beautiful Albatros in New Zealand got me thinking. Cole Palen's Albatros is beautiful too, but how did it end up with it's terribly shaped vertical stabilizer?

If I remember correctly, the original (correct) rudder was damaged on the ground by another aircraft and the replacement rudder was made about 10% larger to improve ground handling and landing.

I distinctly recall seeing the Albatros after the accident with the entire rudder painted silver. It must've been in the mid-80s.

Eric,
I thought that handling had to be the reason, but I would think they would have shaped it better, like just enlarging the scale a little bit.
