RAF Museum

Is there a "on line" means of visiting the RAF Museum at Hendon? Do they have any ongoing "New Build Replica" projects?

I have quite a few photos collected during several visits to RAF Hendon at Photobucket here: Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket

I posted them for those interested in seeing them. You may also check into their website at Department of Research & Information Services for additional information.

Thanks

Thanks for that, Tom. I enjoyed looking at your photos.

Anyone else got any online photographs of military aircraft?

show up early

BTW, if and when you decide to visit it "live", be sure to show up right as they open the doors. The factory building, where many of the WWI aircraft are located (e.g. Pup), closes at 12 Noon, when they open the very dark BoB building. I was told this is due to budget constraints and insufficient personnel to have everything open simultaneously. So, there is only 2 hours to view those displays.

If you're driving and not familiar with the area, I can tell you from first hand experience you can easily get lost (or at least I did), which results in arriving after they've stopped admitting people to the factory building. Quite a major disappointment for me, but reason to return.

RAF Museum Visit.

Thanks for that Tex, I plan to visit sometime this year. It's quite a number of years since I was there last, so on a positive note, perhaps they've been moved from the main hanger so to make room for further exhibits they may have aquired since my last visit.

Hendon

I think it pays to phone ahead and enquire what is open. I recently went for a visit (it's so easy with the tube). But found the WW1 hall closed a severe dissapiontment.
But found John McKenzie fabulous Fe hidden in the darkest corner of the bomber hall and painted black. It was almost invisable and hard to photograph.
Kind regards Allan

Marek Mincbergr has photos of WWI aircraft from 10 European museums, Including the RAF Museum at Hendon, on his website. Just click on the "Museum" button, and select the museum from the drop down menu.

(Lodzermensch recently shared this link in another thread)

I would like to know which is the fake: the P-51, Big Beautiful Doll- an acquaintance of mine here in Iowa has the same marked plane- reputed to be the original. Any idea?

As for projects - not replicas, but they have, slowly being worked on at Cosford, the original LVG C.VI two seater, Sopwith Dolphin which I believe is part replica part original (well, two originals), and a nacelle and engine from a Farman F.40. I don't know what needs to be done to the LVG, but it's been in storage for years since leaving the Shuttleworth Collection, and the Sopwith Dolphin progresses more and more, here's a recent photograph
