This aircraft combines the builders passion for sport aviation with experience as a custom wood boat builder. She is a 3/4 scale replica of the Macchi M-5, a flying boat built in Italy in 1917. Construction is wood/fabric. The airframe is constructed of Sitka Spruce and fuselage facing is mahogany. A Lycoming O-290 engine producing 125 horsepower drives the 72 inch pusher propeller. Maximum airspeed is projected at 90 MPH. Wingspan is 31 feet and length is 24 feet. Empty weight is 960 pounds. The cockpit, though cramped, can seat two. While based on original construction drawings and photographs, modifications were made to ensure that this one-of-a-kind aircraft meets current sport aviation standards for safety and performance using modern materials and design techniques.
