Whittlin' away Solid model update

Been a while since I posted. We have moved our shop. That killed the better part of a month

We are swamped getting customer work out the door since moving, so I don't have any free time to whittle parts yet. As noted, I have some parts of another project commitment to finish first. Stay tuned, the feedblock puzzle is getting closer to being solved.

Latest drawing is the Fusee Spring Cover.

Best Regards,

Tony Moore

Tony, what's the challenge with the feedblock?
If you're really stuck I would sit down and dimension a sketch for you.
Like to see your project completed!
Regards,
John

A few more solid model parts added

Just killin' time while waiting for the opportunity to hobby shop when machine time becomes available.

I can see light at the end of the tunnel on drawing all the parts and then making them.

I haven't drawn the rear jacket band yet. It will incorporate attachment to the side plates and breech area. Haven't decided yet how I wish to go with that.

The top cover hinge pin is 2 parts. Haven't got the exact dimensions on the tiny over center toggle on the end yet. Rather low on the priority list. Finishing the feedblock is at the top.

Good night all.

More Solid Model work

Latest solid modeling done. Interuptor gear mechanism less the internal rotor, steel balls and upper miter gear. Will do those later. They don't show, so I am in no hurry on them. Didn't draw the bent cotter pin either. Haven't figured how to solid model that yet, something so mundane can be hard to draw

Attached thumbnails of right and left side views plus a sorta rear perspective. These show most of the parts drawn in an assembly so far.

Still biding my time, with drawing, until I have some machine time available to play

Best Regards,

Tony Moore

Looking great Tony,

When do you think you might have a finished model to show off? Can't wait.

All the Best,

Jim

Thanks Jim! Finished model, well a CAD solid Model this year

Full ready to mount replica , my crystal ball is a bit cloudy there. I have a long overdue turnbuckle project to finish first. Not having any open machine time has 1 good outcome. It forces me to knuckle down on the solid model of the Spandau.

Best Regards,

Tony

Bronze castings

I have found a new startup foundry that can do bronze. They will be up and running in a couple months. I still have more time ahead than that just finishing drawings on this project.

I intend to do the side mounted casting and front sight in bronze if at all possible. Just makes it more authentic in appearance and possible function on some pieces. The interuptor mechanism housing would be best in bronze also if this foundry is up to the task.

Top cover plate solid model

Latest assembly model nearly finished. Checkering on sight blade not done yet .The elevation screw and hinge pin not drawn yet. Otherwise fairly complete.

The sight will fold and the latch will work the same as the real McCoy.

Haven't decided whether to make a forming die for the S curve or just whittle it from a 5lb block of billet Hate to make 2 or 3 sets of dies to get the springback dialed in for a few parts.

There are milling operations on the top cover anyway, so I may just carve it from solid billet. Also removes annealing then heat treatment operations.

.125" thick 6061 T-6 doesn't bend easily without annealing

I will be in school all next week, so doubtful I'll have any more progress for a week to post.

More detail

Added the rear jacket band and did more editing. I need to draw the feedblock, a knob here and a few screws there and model will be done. Forgot to mention the baseplate to be done.

Feedblock progress

Just got back this afternoon from a week long school. Tonight I spent just over 5 hours on the feedblock. Started from scratch. I haven't drawn the rightside curvy part yet. The main section has a gajillion grooves and contours as it is.

I don't have an old fashioned shaper nor a broaching machine, so it will be a challenge to cut all those grooves and radii.

On the left side, you might notice what looks like a mistake ( overcut radius) It is in the feedblock I am measuring. Don't know if they all were that way or not. It doesn't appear to affect the function. It is the exit for the belt anyway.

Good night,

Tony
