Adj. Pierre Marinovitch SPA94 August 17, 1918

This excellent site shows a photograph of the Fokker DVII brought down in French lines by Adj. Marinovitch of SPA94 at or near Roye. The German pilot was injured and taken prisoner.

HOWEVER and I know Russ G will nod sagely at this, only one German Fokker DVII loss is shown in "The Jasta pilots" and that is from Jasta 44, the pilot was killed between Bernes and Berlancourt. Only two Fokker DVII are claimed by French pilots on that day. The claim by SPA76 seems much farther away. Jasta 44 seems to have mostly faced British opponents at this time and both 74 and 84 Squadrons claimed victories, neither of which resulted in aircraft falling in British lines.

Did Ltn Helmuth Fuerstenau of Jasta 44 succumb to his wounds after being captured?

regards, chaps

Intriguingly, in his log for Jasta 44, Rick Duiven gives:

17Aug18 Ltn Helmuth Fürstenau is KIA over Bernes-Berlaucourt [sic] by an aircraft from Fl Abt 271(A).

Casualties of the German Air Service gives the location as Berlancourt.

Berlancourt is about 12½ miles (20 Km) east of Roye which is where Marinovitch claimed a Fokker 'destroyed', so not particularly close in terms of location; however, the only DVII claimed by the RAF on this date was by Roxburgh-Smith of No 74 Sqn, who made his claim north of Houthulst Forest, so clearly not against Jasta 44.

Over to Russ.
