Another French war artist

We all know about the work of Henri Farré, but there were other French war artists who painted scenes of aviation, though not necessarily specializing in the aerial war alone. François Flameng (1856–1923) was a celebrated French painter during the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th. Flameng initially received recognition for his history painting and portraiture, and became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. During the War Flameng received more fame for his paintings of French World War I soldiers. He was named honorary president of the Society of Military Painters and an accredited documenter for the War Ministry. His work was displayed in the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris, as well as being reproduced in many newsmagazines. At the time they were painted, Flameng's realistic and unflinching war paintings were derided by many critics for being too “realistic” and not including “heroic drama”, though they simply look honestly accurate by today’s standards. Most of his war paintings were donated to the Musée de l'Armée in 1920. He is known to have spent time with Escadrille MS 12, painting its airmen. Several of his aviation paintings featured the Spad XI two-seaters and Spad VII aircraft of Escadrille SPA 62, and he also painted some evocative scenes of nocturnal Voisin bombers.

Here, the famous ace Jean Navarre of MS 12 watches as Flameng paints a picture of Navarre posing in front of his first victory, an Aviatik B type downed on 1 April 1915. Unfortunately, I have never seen that painting published.

The commander of Escadrille MS 12, Captain Raymond de Bernis, also observes Flameng creating the painting, in April 1915. Both photos courtesy of Philippe Guillermin.

Notice the details in this rendering of a Voisin bomber: the spinning generator propeller beneath the nose, the tiny doll mascot located on the front of the nacelle, the bombardier looking through his bombsight and the first bomb falling.
