Both. Hostile Skies indicates that Americans used both the French and British (and Italian!) training systems. Of course, some American pilots joined the war before the U.S. did, so whichever service they joined is the type of training that they received. However, even after the U.S. officially entered the war, groups of pilots were sent to British, French, and Italian schools.
