I know that No. 55, and 100 Squadrons RAF were part of this, but I know there were many other squadrons. Can anyone give me a listing?

Thanks,

Cigogne

Cigogne,
It should interest you that there is a new book out on precisely this topic: "Independent Force: The War Diary of the Daylight Squadrons of the Independent Air Force, June- November 1918" by Keith Rennles, from Grub Street. It is a really superb book, meticulously researched, well-written and illustrated. It gives details of every main mission flown by the daylight bombers, who was involved, who was lost, and their probable German opponents.Sort of akin to how "Bloody April, Black September" is organized. I can't praise it highly enough.

Keith is currently working on the second part of this project, the histories of the night bombing units of the I.F. 97,115,215 & 216 Squadrons.

It's just getting started but if any of the forumites have photos or dopcumentation that might help Keith along, it would greatly speed up the process of getting what promises to be another great addition to the library in print!

I am with Greg. That book on the IAF is excellent, I would advise anyone with an interest should be certain to purchase it. Well worth the money.

I'd forgotten that 45 Squadron was attached to the IF upon its return from Italy. Thanks for jogging my memory, Dan-San.

Graeme:
I am sure you recall the RAF wizards were exchanging 45 Sqdn's Sopwith 1F1 Camels for the over-loaded Sopwith Snipe 7F1a as the war ended. The Fok.D.VII, SSW D.III and D.IV would have eaten them for breakfast!

Dan-San,

Very true. However, if the war had continued into 1919, even the Brass Hats would have had to conclude that the rotary-engined aeroplane had reached its peak in terms of performance; perhaps we'd have seen the Martinsyde Buzzard hit the front-line - I recall reading that it had a performance that surpassed that of the SE5a.
