Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how WW1 warplanes were made like waht materiels were they made of, why did they choose a certain model and the advantages of a certain model

As general rule British aircraft are made as follows; (Note: These are GENERAL RULES - someone always breaks the rules)

Fuselage: Box structure with ash longerons and ash and spruce transverse and vertical members.** The whole thing is diagonally braced with piano wire equipped with turnbuckles to tension the arrangement. Plywood formers and stringers made the shape and the whole thing is covered with flax linen (I believe).

The forward fuselage was generally covered with plywood and aluminium panels. The cowling was aluminium.

Wings: Spars were made of spruce and the ribs of plywood. It was all internally braced with piano wire.** The leading and trailing edges and tailplane structures were made of steel tube.

Bracing: Streamlined 'RAF' wire to keep the whole thing together.

Some other forumite who is interested in IGAF aircraft could explain some of the tricks the Germans used.

Of course, by WWII technology had advanced to the point where they were held together with duct tape and chewing gum.

An interesting spin on this is found in the JOURNAL OF THE CANADIAN AVIATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Volume 37, No.2 (Summer 1999) in the form of an article, "Wood That Could Fly", dealing with relationships between Canadian forestry and Commonwealth aircraft production.** The author, Alistair Reeves, did a magnificent piece of research, followed up with equally fine writing. About 30 years ago the local airport manager showed me his collection among which was a bare fuselage of aluminum tubing (?) which he said was from a Fokker DVII. Can it be? He had an almost completed Thomas Morse Scout in the hangar.

Floyd,

Fokker fuselage frames (DVII, DVIII, DrI, others) were welded-STEEL tube.
