I checked out the medal page on this forum. Surely the list of U.S. medals is incomplete. What about the DFC, the PURPLE HEART. the SILVER STAR, the BRONZR STAR, ETC.?

Hoo-boy; since the press picked up the story of Lyndon johnson's bogus Silver Star I've had to become a medal expert in self-defense.
In WW I the "pyramid of honor" was extremely limited: the MOH and DSC/Navy Cross with the Silver Star Certificate. At one point (up to WW II, I think) the Purple Heart was a meritorious service gong as well as a wound badge.
In 1932 the SS was upgraded to medal status but until c. Aug '42 it was a lesser award than it became later. Til then the Navy Cross was 3rd in line, behind the DSM, which partly explains why so many Crosses were handed out in '42.
Anyway, the Bronze Star didn't appear until '44 when the ground guys felt they needed the equivalent of the Air Medal. Things have continued downhill since then: during the Kosovo "war" some ConUS-based folks got Silver & Bronze Stars for "combat support."
