Here's what Bodenschatz wrote of JGI's hand-over:
"[At Darmstadt] an officer of the General Staff delivers the strict order to fly the planes to Strasbourg and hand them over to the French. The commander curtly replies that, if the order absolutely had to be carried out, then others could do it. He himself would not.
The officers of the Geschwader, having had a presentiment of similar orders, have already touched down in Darmstadt with landings that were not exactly flawless nor gentle. The bulk of the aeroplanes were no longer really usable. The order to fly to Strasbourg is carried out to some extent, with considerable swearing. The French aviation officers who were awaiting these few German machines so expectantly were not at all pleased at how the machines were touched down during landing, and how they looked, both in general and in other respects."
