Top 5 research books for technical data

If you had to pick only 5 books for researching technical data on various aircraft of WWI, what would they be?

Far as I know, the 1960s Harleyford series remains valid. Such titles as Reconnaissance and Bomber Aircraft of the 1914-1918 War.
You will not rise to the occasion: You will default to your level of training.

Well, that really depends on if you want to focus in on a specific country or manufacturer. For the British, Bruce's "British Aeroplanes 1914-1918" is a solid general reference. For the Germans, a good single reference would be Gray & Thetford's "German Aircraft of the First World War." For the French, try Davilla and Soltan's "French Aircraft of the First World War." Those three alone cover a great number of aircraft types.

Add in a reprint of Jane's All the World's Aircraft 1919, and an Aerosphere 1939 (for all the engines, but tough to find), and that'll keep you reading for a long time.

A lot of data keeps coming to light, so there are those who will always find fault with one reference or another. If you're looking for specific plane information, the Windsock Datafiles on individual planes are really quite nice.

Thanks guys. This will help get me started. I'd like to find a couple of books that cover a large selection of aircraft as that would get me a lot of data quickly. Then I could add books like the Datafiles for single plane types as needed ( I have a couple of those already).

There are couple of very good books concerning Austro-Hungarian aviation.

Peter M. Grosz, George Haddow and Peter Schiemer (1993)
Austro-Hungarian Army Aircraft of World War One
Flying Machines Press
Second edition 2002.

Peter Schupita (1983) [in German]
Die k.u.k. Seeflieger: Chronik und Dokumentation der österreichisch-ungarischen Marineluftwaffe 1911-1918 (Beiträge zur österreichischen Marinegeschichte)
Bernard & Graefe Verlag, Koblenz

Perhaps the most important father of the steam engine was the notion that ideas were property ... (William Rosen, The Most Powerful Idea in the World)
