Mine is perhaps the definitive site on the last flight of the "Red Baron". It is said that the R.A.F started a tradition with a flyover at his funeral with one plane of the formation missing. Can anyone shed some light on this. Is the above true? As much info as possible please, I wish to post it to my site Thank you.

I severely doubt that the missing man formation originated in WW I, whether MvR was the object or not. In my experience, it has always been flown in the WW II "finger four" tactical formation, as if your right-hand fingertips were the four aircraft seen from above. The lead position is the second from the left, with No. 2 being the index/trigger finger. No. 3, leading the second element, is the ring finger with the pinkie being echeloned back on the far right. During the pass over the "target" No. 1 pulls up abruptly and out of formation, leaving the "missing" space between No. 2 and No. 3.
You will not rise to the occasion: You will default to your level of training.

Hello Barrett,
thanks for the info. Its not quite clear from your info if there are five planes or just four in the original configuration.

G'day John,
You have a great site, I must admit I was a lttle put off by your domain name until I read why you selected that name. Keep up the good work mate, I noticed you have been trying to raise money through sponsers and good old Kraft(Vegemite)let you down, why don't you drop Dick Smith(no relation wish he was) a note and see if he can help you out, the way he feels about Phillip Morris (the owners of Vegemite) he might just throw some cash your way.

Again great site, if anyone wants to hear an eyewitness' report on MvR's downfall, take a wonder over to John's site.

John, I can't answer your question, but I can say as a career RAF man, now retired, that it was always my beleif that the missing man formation was an American thing. The suggestion that it has to be post WW1 (by a long way) because of the way the formation is mad up makes a heap of sense.

G'day andrew,
( God it's good to use that word rather than,Hi.) Thank you for your moral support. I need it!
Financial support could be on the way, GIO financial services (who set up my superannuation package,(I'm 67)) are very interested and not about to part with much money but it will help somewaht with the bills, should they come good.
If you have any suggestions for inclusions on my site I'd like to hear them. the site is hosted in the States (It is 83Mb in size) and there is no limit on traffic or site size, so I am able to extend it indefinately. (Wow)
Once again, thanks for your moral support.
