Robert Taylor

Another great artist recently passed away: Robert Taylor.
He ist best known for his WW2 aviation art, but he did some WW1 paintings too.
A few years ago I got to personally meet him, a really nice guy, who created phantastic paintings. (I got some prints with signatures of WW2 aces).

Hi Kanzler,

Yes, I'd heard of Robert Taylor's passing. He did do some WWI artwork, as you said, especially back when there were a few WWI aviators left to sign the prints.

Here is a group of 85 Sqn SE5a's - signed by Gwilym Lewis of 40 Sqn, among others.

Camels from No. 209 Sqn, signed by the very elderly Thomas Sopwith himself.

A nice picture of an Avro 504.

Sorry to hear this, I've also been a big fan for decades, and have several of his books.

Yes, I saw where Taylor passed away. The family and his business associates have formed some sort of Robert Taylor Trust to carry on matters??? It is not clear just what this Trust entails?? A recent art issue seems to state it is a new Taylor artwork. Be interesting to see where all this Trust stuff leads?? Watch for updates??

There is a son, Richard Taylor, who also does aviation art. I have not seen any World War I work from him, though.

Richard Taylor: Yes, his son's artwork IMHO is quite good. He seems to be currently working on using the multitude of autographs collected from veterans of WW2 airborne units and now being added to prints at enormous prices for very limited runs of drawings?? Less work to a drawing and hefty return for the effort?? Easy to see where the future of aero art is headed?? Small quickies with autos and big profit. Even the mainstream of contemporary artists is now pushing out quicky little works for fast profits. Gone are the large one-off grand gesture studio pieces at yearly wage amounts. Everybody is after the fast buck.
