Some pictures from the Hoosier Dawn Patrol

Just a few pics from Friday and Saturday - just an absolutely great time!

Billy Thompson won Pilots Choice Award with his 1/3 Sopwith Pup:

Del Johnson (von Delby) with his BUSA Fokker Triplane:

1/3 Fokker D.VII under review:

Spectators and fellow pilots follow the action:

More Pics

von Delby takes a break from the action:

Del also brought along his latest work in progress, the 1/3 Fokker Dr.1 Triplane from Glenn Torrance Models:

Doug Cox assembles his Balsa USA Nieuport 28:

Both Del and Doug allowed me flight time on their airplanes this weekend - both planes got quite a workout

and I only got a few grass stains on Doug's upper wing (it was pretty breezy on Saturday!)

Del and Art Johnson with Del's GTM Fokker E.V (of streaked wing fame):

Art Shelton's Fokker Eindekker (6th Place at the NATS I understand!):

Billy Thompson's late, lamented "Kit-A-Plane" Nieuport 17:

Plane was rekitted when the battery pack fell out while upside-down!

Billy's win with his Pup meant that he just traded evenish . . .
His prize was his choice of a 1/4 Balsa USA Kit!

Unfortunately, the folks from BUSA were unable to attend - they were stranded in Pennsylvania with a blowed up motorhome motor!

Contest Director Steve Percifield (in red shirt) hard at work:

The event was a fun, no pressure event - just a great time!

And a lineup of aeroplanes - pretty cool!:

I know there was a bunch of folks running around with cameras who are going to have a bunch better pictures than I got (I spent most of the weekend trying to remember where I left my camera lying - I am kinda high maintenance that way! ).

I left the event early, as today (Sunday) is my wedding anniversary (11 years), and while I've got the missus talked into going to Rhinebeck in three weeks, I haven't quite convinced her yet just how badly I'm going to need Glenn's new 1/3 Scale Fokker Dr.1 kit when it's released!

Best part of the weekend was of course seeing bunches of folks again from previous events (Dayton), meeting new friends, and putting some names and faces to their Internet Handles (PropNut ended up hanging out with us Friday Nite and Saturday Morning breakfast on the way to the field, and seemed none the worse for it!). And this being my first visit ever to the AMA's National Flying Site, I was very impressed - short grass as far as you can see!!! The weather (except for wind on Saturday) was not nearly as bad as forecast (and today should be fabulous), and we never got rain either Friday or Saturday during the day!

This event goes to the very tops of things to do in 2007 - should be the same time and place next year - I've just GOTS to finish my Nieuport!!!

'til later,

Lee

Lee,
This event was great. It was great to meet & talk to you & Del. I'll be back in 2007 and maybe I'll be flying too.
I agree, the AMA flying site is like nothing else. Where else could one see WWI RC model flying, a Free Flight model event and even some rocket launches and ride Honda FatCat dirt bikes everywhere
What a stress relief for me

Twas a great weekend! Del, Lee, Doug... sure was great to see you all again. Jan, wish you'd come up and said hello. I thought I saw you over talking to Doug and Lee at one point, but wasn't sure.

For those who decided not to come because of possible weather issues, you missed a great time. I don't know what the final count was, but I believe that there were around 26 pilots registered, and nearly 50 planes.

Many more pics to come, but for now, here's one of my Bristol M1c dawn flight on Sunday. (Thanks Rhonda!)
