A special aspect of this year's Southern Dawn Patrol was the fact that TWO ROTARY engine powered models were flown at the event.
One was a giant version of the Proctor Antic called a Gigantic owned by Robert Cooper, with 1/3 scale Bentley replica I believe was built by Paul Knapp. It was flown by Mac Hodges in a demo flight. It sounded and flew great. Robert told me after the flight they had waited 15 years to fly the engine on an airplane.
The other was Ray Williams' Morane L parasol with a LeRhone replica. It also sounded great, but Ray was having some control problems with the plane. Fortunately, he was able to land it safely.
For those in attendance, it was a realtreat to see such engineering works of art in the air.

Oh, I have reserved Hodges Hobbies Field for December 3-4, 2010 for Southern Dawn Patrol - 2010. Mark your calendars.

One of my friends, Keith Smith, gave me a disc of photos that includes one of the Bentley motor in action. Unfortunately, I don't have any stills of the LeRhone in action. But it DID fly also.
It was really a pleasure to see TWO rotary powered R/C planes in the air.

RC Report On Line magazine has run an article and photos about the 2009 Southern Dawn Patrol in their January 2010 issue.
If you are a subscriber to that on line magazine, check it out. If you aren't a subscriber, consider doing so.
