Southern Dawn Patrol (R/C)
The Second Annual Southern Dawn Patrol is scheduled for December 4-5, 2009. It will again be held at Hodges Hobbies, Andersonville, GA.
We already have some verbal committments for nice sponsorships and expect to have a nice collection of prizes and awards.
It is a Fly In style event for scale replicas of WW I aircraft through 1918. (please no Antics, Ugly Sticks, etc).
We plan to hold one voluntary fun event each day for those who wish to participate. (No, I won't enter the balloon bust again).
Here is the Website link SOUTHERN DAWN PATROL
Check often for updates about additional sponsors and other information.
There are several R/V hookups for water and electric located along the flight line. Please contact Hodges Hobbies for reservations.

We have added Dynamic Balsa as a sponsor for this year's Southern Dawn patrol.
We also will be awarding a special nice prize to a modeler flying with a XOAR WW I style propeller. If you haven't tried one of these great looking props, they are top notch.
New sponsors and details are being noted as available. We're looking forward to another great event.

Preparations for Southern Dawn Patrol 2009 are moving along. We added RC Report Online to the sponsor list. If you haven't checked out this on line version of that great magazine, please do so.
Today I received a certificate from Balsa USA for one of our prize winners. They were exceptionally generous this year providing a certificate good for ANY WW I air plane kit they sell. They really have a nice line up of buildable and affordable WW I kits and supplies. Thanks Mark, Dave and the rest of the group at Balsa USA. At Dawn Patrol Rendezvous Mark told me they hope to send a representative to the event this year.
Glenn Torrance is also planning to be at the event. He is hoping to have his 1/3 scale D VII kit available about the time of the event. Hopefully he can have a substantially complete prototype there.

I was just asked a question about aircraft qualified for Southern Dawn Patrol.
The basis for this event is to promote aircraft of the WW I era and aircraft leading up to the Great War.
The general guideline is this:
The model should be a scale (or reasonably scale) representation of aircraft originally designed, and examples flown prior to the end of 1918. This general rule includes aircraft later used in other capacities such as DH4's used as mail planes, Jennies used as barnstormers, Fokkers and SPADS painted in bright post war colors, Etc. Also, if the particular plane was built in 1919, but meets the design and first flown criteria, it qualifies also. An example is a DH 4 built in 1919 and used as a mail plane. Since the design was prior to 1919 and examples of the DH 4 was flown prior to 1919, it will qualify.
The intent is not to get into a hair splitting bright line of what qualifies and what doesn't, but rather to keep to the spirit of the WW I era. Antics, Elders, etc, generally do not qualify.
If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Dale

We are going to print name tags, with a Steve Anderson print for the background, for those attending Southern Dawn Patrol.
If you are planning to attend, send me your name, state you live in, and what you plan to bring to fly.
In addition to printing a name tag, we are going to start a list of planned attendees on the website.

It was mentioned earlier that there will be a special prize drawing for pilots whose model is flying with a Xoar WW I style propeller.
While there are several sizes and styles of the WW I props, there are an awful lot of models that cannot use them due to size or style issues. Therefore, the pool for the Xoar prize has been expanded to include models using ANY Xoar propeller.
If you haven't tried a Xoar prop, you should do so, they are top notch.

Wow, just two weeks to Southern Dawn Patrol. We've been getting a lot of response and it looks like there will be some really nice planes in attendance.
Mac Hodges tells me the field is in great shape. And of course his hobby shop is well supplied
John Olson made up some nice plaques again this year and Rose will be out there taking action photos to put on the winner's plaques. Of course, if you want your picture anyway, I am sure you can sweet talk her into taking one and printing it for you.
We're going to put Mike Celeskey to work this year as announcer.
Rose and I are really looking forward to seeing many of you again and to making new friends.
By the way, if you are using GPS or Mapquest/Google navigation, check the route for looking reasonable. Last year a few participants got the Georgia Tourism Board's view of the back roads of Georgia.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

We are getting additional replies from sponsors for Southern Dawn Patrol.
Today we added Williams Brothers Model Products and Warbird Colors to our list of sponsors.
Please check the website for all our sponsors and support them. They support us.
