Paul Willcox

Great site. Following seems to be misisng from your list of MCs: George Talbot Willcox MC 1895-1968 (RFC) Extract: ROYAL FLYING CORPS COMMUNIQUE NO. 122 Dated 21st January 1918 On the 9th/10th Capt. Willcox and 2/AM Rennie, No 101 Squadron, left ground 5.20 pm to test the weather. Having reached I000 ft the pilot decided to cross the lines, although the weather was getting worse and the wind stronger. He flew to Menin on which place he dropped 8.25lb bombs and then turned in order to re?cross the lines, "He had a dead head?wind against which it was practically impossible to make any way, the wind having a velocity of about 50 miles per hour. The hostile anti?aircraft soon realized the difficulties with which the machine had to contend, and were not slow to take advantage of it. Owing to the very high wind, the machine drifted by Lille In spite of efforts to prevent it, and immediately a heavy barrage of machine guns and anti?aircraft guns firing tracer and burning shells (flaming Onions) was opened up at it. This lasted for some considerable time, as the machine was unable to get away. The machine having been fitted with wireless, the Aerodrome from time to time received messages from it and these proved to be of the greatest assistance. By this means intimation was received that bombs had been dropped and the whereabouts and condition of the machine. The Aeroplane still continued to drift south ant Capt Willcox was unable to do anything to prevent it. For a short time he was lost and a message was received asking for rockets. These were fired and the assistance ?of the searchlight section (anti?aircraft) was asked for. They put on their lights which proved to be very useful to the Pilot, By this time, another message was received, stating that the machine was near Bethune, and being shelled heavily by our own AA Guns. In spite of it having fired the colour of the night. Eventually No 23 was reached and the pilot shortly after saw the Aerodrome.? The squadron Commander says, ?This flight is in my opinion the finest that any night flyer pilot has yet put up. It was impossible for Capt.Willcox to go higher than 2,000ft as the wind above that was 90 mph (Viz.,30 miles per hour faster than the speed of the Machine). Capt Willcox's machine was very badly hit both while on this and the other side of the lines. "

Edward Roy Pithey

Superb Site. RAF Pers.Man.Cen. records show Croye Pithey died on 21/02/1920."Reported missing while flying from Chester to Baldonnel". Not in 1919.

I've admired WW1 fighter planes my entire life, especially the DR-1. I hope to have a web site of my own soon, and my visit to yours has increased me to double my efforts.
