Ernest G. HoffmanWallingford, Connecticut , USA

My Father Carl W. Hoffmann was in the Austrian Air Service. He wrote that he forced a Sopwith Camel to land in Italy in 1918. The pilot was a Canadian, a Captain Taylor. I'm looking for verification.

I love the movie, FLYBOYS. I just don't see any of their names. Were they real people or made up for the movie?

I found a newspaper article tucked in a family bible about my Great-Great Uncle 2nd Lt. Wilson Porter of the Royal Flying Corps having gone 'missing' March 24, 1918 and that my great-great grandparents didn't know what actually happened to him until they read an article in an American magazine saying that he had been shot down by the Red Baron. I found out #67 of his victims was shot down the day my uncle went missing. Does anybody know where I could get more information about this?

Reply to webmaster 2Lt W Porter (KIA) of 56 Squadron was reported missing in action on 24 March 1918. Flying S.E.5a (C5389) west of Peronne. May have been shot down by Oblt Ritter von Greim of Jasta 34b (#10).

Altho I am primarily interested in the SPAD-VII, SPAD-XIII and also the attendant HISPANO-SUIZA 718 cubic inch engine and especially the 200 h.p. series I will return to post some hopefully interesting things about the problems of these aircraft and the faults due to the lack of knowledge of these engines peculiarities. This is as soon as get my E-Mail fixed after moving to New Mexico. Yours M.L. Anderson
