I've been fascinated by aviation particularly ww1, since reading Biggles as a boy. Done a bit of "real" flying but eyesight and uselessness at sport precluded joining the RAF and having children precluded getting a PPL. This site feels like coming home. Thanks!

Hi! You have a great sight. I am fond of Col. William "Bill" Thaw III of the Escadrille Lafayette. He is buried here in Pittsburgh, PA. His brother was 1st. Lt. Alexander Blair Thaw II. Alexander was killed in a landing accident; and is buried in France. He has a memorial grave next to Col. Bill's. Keep up the good work, Regards, John

Thank You for a very interesting and informativ site. I have marked as a preferred-site, and I am on the site almost daily. I am a military historian and work a lot with (mostly) the Danes who distinguished themselves in foreign military service. My warmest regards Knud Aundorf

My grandfather, Harry Magnall, was a gunner-observer in an RE 8, and it is both fascinating and horrifying to see the clumsy contraption to which he entrusted his life. (The commentary does little to remove one's doubts.) I recall Grandpa telling me that the plane's balance was so precarious that it could not be flown with an empty rear cockpit; sometimes a sack of sand had to substitute for the gunner during non-combat flights!

Nice site. I named my company Hat in the Ring LTD in honor of the brave men who fought and died over the skies of France in the Great War.

Without a doubt the best WW l Aviation site I have seen. I ejoyed learning about home town hero Elliott White Springs. Its amazing the guts these gentlemen possessed to fight at altitude in machines made of wood, wire and fabric. Bravo

I'm writting this for my Father he has been into planes since he was a child. You can imagine growing up at the end of WWII. To me those planes were amazing. For a surprise could you make some copies for my dad{full-picture length} he would be a fan of yours for life. I love to do special things for him. 5 Wander way/Lake in the Hills/Il.60156 From Amanda /I hope it's not too much- THANKYOU!

Very interesting website. Easily the best I've seen so far in regards to WWI and the air war. Information is hard to find if my extensive online search is anything to go by. The hardest part is finding logos/emblems/markings used by the various squadrons and identifying marks used by the Aces (if they had any). I suspect I'm going to have to try and find a book... Anyway, brilliant site!

Hey,great site!I've been looking for info on Francis G. Quigley for years. The book Knights of the Air from Time/Life credits him with 34 victories. Its terrible that after surviving so many brushes with death in the air he was done in by the flu!By the way,is anyone going to come out with a new WWI flight sim?
