The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) was established pursuant to an Act of Congress, approved on 9 July 1918. |
| Criteria: |
"Like the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross is an award for gallantry in action. It may be won by any one who distinguishes himself—or herself—by extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United States. It may recognize any deed performed since April 6, 1917, the day our country declared a state of war existed between us and Germany.
It is for great gallantry—but not quite great enough to deserve the Medal of Honor."
