"Wolff's Requiem" is a depiction of the final flight of Leutnant Kurt Wolff. Wolff, a member of the famed Jasta 11 and close friend of Manfred von Richthofen, was met his death while flying Fokker F.1 102/17 on September 15, 1917. While on patrol that afternoon, Wolff, along with fellow Jasta 11 member Ltn Carl von Schoenebeck, attacked a flight of Sopwith Camels of No. 10 Squadron RNAS. The fight was brief but intense, and the odds quickly turned against the two german pilots. As Wolff singled out a Camel to attack, he was suddenly hit from behind by Flt Lt. Norman MacGregor. MacGregor fired a brief burst, and then immediately had to zoom to avoid colliding with the triplane. MacGregor’s report reads as follows:

“I got into a good position very close on one triplane - within 25 yards - and fired a good burst. I saw my tracers entering his machine. I next saw him going down in a vertical dive, apparently out of control.”

Finally it's done!

Really nice job on this one. I kept a close eye on the thread, and was impressed with your techniques for creating this image.

Russ -

Having seen this from ovum to birth and then finally in person at Dayton, this is maybe your best so far. I still have to reserve the "10" since I know you've got better in you. We need fractions here though - 9.5 is probably more appropriate....

Really super all the way around.

Russ,

I'm going to disagree with Mike on this one. It deserves a "10". The FI has just the right amount of buttery sunlight striking it. Makes the piece really pop with nice contrast and lighting. Nice cool colors in the background.

Read the first part of the article in Aerobrush. Funny we both had FI 102 and 103 in the same issue.

Russ,

Outstanding F.I Triplane piece! Is this one available for me in print form?

Best Regards, Gary Sewall
