This piece features the legendary yellow Fokker DVII of Oberleutnant Erich Löwenhardt, Germany's 3rd ranking ace of WW1, behind only Manfred von Richthofen and Ernst Udet.

Löwenhardt was an aggressive, skilled fighter whose score grew steadily. At the end of May 1918 he received Germany's highest honor, the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) after 24 kills. Flying the new Fokker D.VII, he added eight more in June and no fewer than 16 in July. His tally climbed to 53 on August 9.

After scoring his 54th victory, he collided with Leutnant Alfred Wenz of Jasta 11. Both men jumped from their planes but Löwenhardt was killed when his parachute failed to open and he fell to his death from 12,000 feet.

I especially like the use of light and colour in this one. Also happy you didn't hide the ground using clouds. Looks quite nice.

Russell:
This does not depict a Fok,D.VIIF42xx/18 which Oblt.Loewenhardt was flying when he collided with Ltn.Wenz The top cowling would of had six large staggered louvers and the side panel three in the upper rear in staggered length of 200, 300 and 400mm.
Blue Skies,

Was that really necessary, Dan??? IN YOUR OPINION it doesn't, but another VERY reliable source tells me that this is as accurate as we know it to be.

Russell,

Excellent job. Those colors are beautiful, light, color, atmosphere, composition, IMO all excellent. Is there a mottled pattern of yellow on the wheel covers? Where can I see the kind of louvre pattern you used? I'm so wanting to re-create your colors in a 3D plane.

My tribute to your painting: Löwenhardt

I almost expect to see a flight of SE's poke out below the clouds into the clearing...

This is also an awesome work, filled with wonderful use of color and light. the way you captured the leaders streamers blows me away.

Folks, this looks so much better in hand; get one!

Well done Russell

Russell -- I note that you show the olive color of the top of the cowling on both sides of the guns just forward of the cockpit and extending to the engine cutout. This is also shown in the color profile of Lowenhardt's Fokker D VII in Osprey's "Fokker D VII Aces, Part One."

I have seen some models and renditions of this airplane with the yellow color over the whole cowling, including that location. But I have seen the olive color depicted not only on Lowenhardt's plane but a couple of others, including the Fokker D VII of Harald Auffarth. It almost appears to be some type of anti-glare treatment.

I have been told by at least one historian that he believed that when the original fabric was painted over with the yellow color, the top of the cowling would also have been painted. So I was wondering what your basis is for showing the olive section.

I really love your whole painting. It really gives a glorious feel to flying that airplane. The closest that I will get is to be on the controls of an R/C transmitter.

Inspirational!

Hello Russell:
I am not being critical, It is a very good painting. My problem is I know all 28 varitions of the Fokker D.VII. My apologies,
Happy New Year,
Dan-San
