The deadly Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero made its combat debut in September 1940 over Hankow, China. A unit of 13 Imperial Navy Zeros engaged a formation of Soviet-built Popilarkov I-15 & I-16 fighters of the Chinese Nationalist air-force. In a whirling melee, the Zeros destroyed all but one of the 27 Chinese fighters, several of them on the ground after they force-landed. The sole surviving Chinese pilot crashed accidently whilst trying to escape at low-level. Not a single Zero was lost.
