In September 1915, 23 Squadron was formed at Gosport with an assortment of aircraft including the F.E.2b and Martinsyde G.100. Posted to France in March 1916, it was re-equipped with SPAD VIIs in February 1917. SPAD XIIIs followed in December but were replaced by Sopwith Dolphins in April 1918. The squadron was disbanded at Waddington in December 1919.
