I am traveling to Europe next month, and will be spending most of my time in Eastern countries such as Poland. I know the Richtofen family home was in Poland and was pillaged by the Russians, but does it still stand? Does anyone have any recommendations or WW1 aviation sites or Museums to visit in Germany or any other Eastern countries??

The Richthofen home does still exist in Swidnica, Poland. I believe that it has been remodeled into individual apartments. An article titled "Schweidnitz Revisited" about the home, appeared in a 1991 issue of "Over the Front."

If you end up or get near to Stuttgart, check out the Deutches Museum. It is comparable to our Simthsonian and you will not be able to see all it has to offer in one day. It sports a very good aviation section and also shows some of the damage the museum endured during WWII. I went there several years ago while stationed in Germany and it was worth the trip.

If you get to Krakow be sure to see the Polish Aviation Museum, http://www.muz-lotnictwa.krakow.pl/estrona.html

The Deutsches Museum is a good recommendation but it's in Munich, not Stuttgart. The Auto and Technik Museum at Sinsheim is not too far from Stuttgart and well worth a visit- prepare to spend an entire day there, and not just for the aircraft (although there are plenty of those). And while you are at it, you could take in the sister facility at Speyer.

If visiting the Deutsches Museum, be sure to get out to their annex at Schleissheim, just off the nortern edge of Munich.

Amazing museum in Prague. Am still looking for the info I brought back. Large number of very unusual aircraft, certainly close to 100.

cubsfan- There is a book following in the footsteps of the Red Baron you might want to pick up. Not too expensive and carries you through all the historical sites related to MvR's career.

Have been to the Sinsheim museum and it is good if you are a car freak, also. Do not forget the Imperial War Museum in London, either.

Yep: Deutches Museum (in Munich) is a good 'un. Too bad you're not going to England: Hendon (static displays only) and Old Warden (British equivalent of the Old Reinbeck) are among the best in the world.

The link below offers photos of the Richthofen home as it looks today and it also has the current address of the house with other pertinent information.
