Roden DVII instrument panel

I'm working on the 48th scale Roden kit and the panel is mounted to another plate or box type structure. Is this part of the ammo storage? If so am I right to paint it a shade of aluminum?

You are right in assuming that it is the ammo container. And as far as I know these were usually unpainted metal containers.

This picture of a Reproduction DR.1 Cockpit (http://storage.mfa.free.fr/gallery/fokker/int2.jpg) shows it quite clearly (not exactly the same though).
