View Full Version : I'm done

Finally finished the last of my 41 kits in 1:72 scale depicting famous aces and their planes with Max Immelmans' E-III. I added the brass tubing to the cylinders; like the way that turned out. I'm sure experts will notice the rigging is bigger than scale, but that's all I could find at the time. I'll probably change it for skinnier stuff in the near future.

I really like the metal effect on the cowling. How did you do that?

Very pretty. Yes, tell us about the metal effect, please?

I really like the metal effect on the cowling. How did you do that?
Really simple, actually; I just painted the cowling's main coat in silver, then mixed some flat black with the silver and used an almost-dry brush to do spots overtop of the first coat. The kit is an 1:72 Eduard non-profipack.

As everyone else has said, that's a great looking model!
How about some photos of the rest of your collection?

Great stuff! Thanks.
How did you settle on 41 aces, and how did you aquire the kits?
In any event, I'd love to have a collection like that at some point. It's quite an accomplishment -- especially when the models are as well finished as yours are.

How did you settle on 41 aces, and how did you aquire the kits?
That's all I could fit into the display cabinet. I'll be buying a larger one at some point, then watch out! Most of the kits were bought locally(Ottawa) except for a few (3)from another generous forum member from Louisiana and one ordered from the US through a local store.

I just remembered the Fokker DVI's pilot; it was Wilhelm Speidel, who went on to become a high ranking general in Hitler's small trusted circle and ended up getting 20yrs at Nuremburg.

Here are the latest pics of the finished display with all 41 planes. I plasticized the pilots pictures and info cards so they look a lot better now. The planes are organized in order of the pilot's victories from the top, left to right. Top row guys had from 80, down to 50 victories, 2nd row from 40 to 30, 3rd row 20 to teens and last below 10. (for some reason, I missed MVR, Fonck and the rest of the top shelf boys in that first pic, sorry! I'll be adding a few more in the near future and will probably get a couple of those IKEA tall glass displays to accomodate all of them, I think these guys are too cramped.
Hope you enjoy, cheers!

Thanks, John, I really did feel like I was honouring these brave guys, I hope that nobody ever forgets them. My father wanted to be one of them in WWII but the war ended before his training started. He would have been training on Harvards over the skies of Ottawa. Considering the life expectancy of these guys in both wars, I'm glad he never made it.
A friend of mine is perfecting a software that lets you walk around a house in 3D and he has done my house as an example on his web site. He took pictures of 15 of my planes (36 poses each) so that you can click on the plane, get a movable 360 view of it and the picture and info card on the pilot will pop up! It should be ready soon and I will post it here for anyone who wants to see it.
Cheers

Fabulous display and collection! Regarding rigging in 1/72 scale, might I suggest you try stretchable thread from Aeroclub. It's thinner than monofilament and because it's "stretchy" it stays taut no matter what. Great stuff.

Here are the missing "right top-shelf" pics that include MVR, Fonck, Bishop, Udet and Mannock. What do you think of the hand-painted stork on Fonck's Spad, and that "god of wind" on Jacob's Dr1? Not too bad for an old geezer, eh?

I've got to switch that propeller on Jacob's Dr1 to the Camel type. Everytime I look at these, I find something that I can improve on, especially with the info I get here on this awesome site, it just never ends!:)

Here's the link to my friend's site that deals with "3D Virtual visits" for real-estate purposes; on the bottom right is the link button to the 3D view of my 1:72 Airco DH-2.
http://www.panomedia.ca/homeFr/panomedia-vv/objets3D/index.php#
If you go to the main page and click on "visites virtuelles", then click on the dark green icon/image on the bottom right (my house)you can take a tour into the TV room where I have the WW1 display of my planes.
It is yet unfinished, because he is supposed to link a bunch of the planes in the display to a separate 3D image with a pop-up info card and pilot picture.
