A beautiful composition. I'm not sure about where the sun is supposed to be. Is it below the horizon? It appears to be below the horizon and to the right. But the moon is lit by a sun that is shining from the left. That's just an observation from someone who probably doesn't know much about what he is talking. Still pretty composition of a dawn patrol going out.

Yes, sun has set just below off to right. No moon glow as that would be opposite side of point of view. The sunlight is controlled in 3d max using an Omni light with shadow and light color is a warm pink tone matching the horizon color to light the model slightly. ;)

Ahh yes, I believe I can fix that in future evironment scene renders. I use a photoshop utility to generate background sky and had not given thought to the "Astronomy." Thanks for poining that out. ;)

Probably the next ship images will be of the Chicora. I am working on a 3d model of the ship. The ship sank in a storm on Lake Michigan in 1895 and has never been found. The expidition last summer actually located another vessel but not this one(I think I might still have the old press release info saying it was found). Hopefully next year it will be found with side scan sonar. I hope to do a 3d animation of the sinking once (if found) details as to destruction come to light.

Wouldn't it be fun to drain a 5 sq. mile area of one of the Great Lakes? Just think what you might find.

I was talking to one of the volunteers at TOWARF (Town of Oakville Water Air Rescue Force), who told of coming across a P-38 in Lake Ontario during training.)

But the lakes often keep what they take. My wife lost two cousins off Bluffer's Park. The boat and their bodies were never found, just a few items. Her aunt and uncle raised their baby girl.

THere are a number of Navy aircraft in Lake MI from the aircraft carrier training vessels they had on the lakes. A number of aircraft that went overboard or ditched. There were 2 vessels converted into small flattops for landing and takeoff.

Here is a link to one plane that was brought up a few years ago and restored to static display. I photographed the plane when it was first brought up a number of years ago and you could still see most of the paint and clearly make out the markings. THe plane is restored to markings which it actually wore when on the Ranger. This was the earliest paint the plane was wearing as most of the layers had worn off. Amazing find.

DH2 and Alb DIII would be a good pair. Perhaps.

That would be a great pair. Also how about a DrI and Camel ?

I already have a DR model but it could use some work. Camel would probably be a good one. I am trying to figure out better ways to make airfoils in 3d before I venture into another project.

Wingstrut and others,
In one of the photos of 29 sqdn. in the Nieuport Aces of WW1 book it looks like the upper wing surfaces and turtlebacks are darker than silver, any chance they were PC-10?
Good stuff wingstrut.

Like a lot of photo interpretation (or, misinterpretation) what you see is nothing more than the effect of sunlight angle on the object. In this case a "silver" colored object. Take a coin out on even an average day and observe how dark one side can be. Better example would be a larger sheet of aluminum foil, fold it, lay it on the ground, walk 20 feet away and observe.

The only paint scheme of green which was applied in such fashion that I am aware of was the Belgian Nie later in the war. As I understand this was implemented only due to the fact that their airfield was bombed and it was a crude attempt to offer camoflauge.

If you take a look at the photo on page 24 of Nieuport Aces of WW1, aircraft "5C" in the foreground has a definate line of demarcation on the lower right wing about two feet out from the root. Inboard of this the color matches the side of the fuselage, apparently silver, and outboard of it the color is the same as the top of the top wings, the turtleback, and the elevators, and is darker. Also, all of these components are at different angles, if the theory is that silver will show differently at different angles then why do they all look like the same color? And if the turtleback is curved shouldn't it gradually change color (or shade)?

Pardon me if I seem an old grumpy, but shouldn't this pic and correspondence be in the Models section? Am I nasty for thinking it is a waste of the "serious" section? Abuse on the back of a cheque please.
