Photos you are about to see are taken during 1920's at city of Sortavala. Finns had an Aviation Detachment there many of the planes were captured or bought just few years earlier.

Thanks Martti. These are really beautiful pictures. I especially was impressed by the (M09-) Stetinin M-16.

Martti, to come back on this fine collection f ancient pictures.

Picture M10 is quoted as a Georges Levy flying boat, but this one is a Grigorovich flying boat, as are pictures M13, M14 and M1513.

Can you give a translation from the finnish text of the crash of the Caudron G.3 (picture M1511 Aprillia)? Is it possible fot the text of M1513 too?

Yes, sure. M1511:

April Fool's joke on 1th April 1922. Sergeant major Antti Kopra was flying Cauldron G.3 when it dropped from 70 meters after the engine had stopped. The plane fell down to the center of Sortavala, in front of S. Saarikivi's shop. Kopra and student Huhtinen were not hurt. A caricature made to foreign newspaper from the event depict "how Finnish pilots go to buy tobacco".

M1513
