Last year my RB2 CD wore out and before I could replace it we got a new PC with XP, so I bid a fond farewell to my favorite game. Before that happened I had upgraded the game with the RB3 download and noticed some big differences, especially with the aircraft. In RB2: 1)the DrI was untouchable-with unlimited ammo you could take on waves of Allied planes(the Voss syndrome?). 2)the Albatross DIII-V handled like a truck-except a truck doesn't have tearaway wings. 3)the SE5 was not very handy, but the Spad XIII was. After the upgrade I noticed a big improvement in the Albatros planes, but the DrI became "trickier". The SE5 could now turn, while the Spad was good for one pass only; if you missed, the target would escape or be right behind you. Now I ordered one of the surplus RB3's and I'm getting the old computer out of the attic; it'll be only RB and Panzer Commander. What are the major differences between RB3 and an upgraded RB2?

To be honest I don't know because I never tried upgrading RB2; I just got RB3D. To fly online with the latter, BTW, you will need to install the 1078 patch - I can send you this by ICQ or email once you get up and running, if you like.
I would thoroughly recommend you have a go at flying online. It's much more difficult and thus challenging. AI planes at "Elite" level are very easy game compared to a decent online pilot.
Most of us who fly online have organised ourselves into squadrons. You may or may not be interested in joining one some time: I have met some fine friends this way. Another joy is that the game is cheat-free{ really!

When you go to sierra.com to upgrade, do not look under RBII for the superpatch. It is not listed there; only the upgrades to RBII.
Look under RB3D for the patch that upgrades RBII to RB3D. That's the patch Duckman is talking about.

I wouldn't recommend using RBII as maentioned earlier there are some bugs. Rather your better of getting a copy of RB3D.
It willl install and run from your hard drive. Just use the click 6 times on upper right maltese cross.

I really can't say how different RB2 is from 3D due to the fact i've never played the second. I found the very first dos game, then found 3D, never actually saw 2 lol. And yes you do run into the "Uber" mode as we came to call it. Planes would gain speed and manueverability, achieving climb rates that would put an F-14 to shame lol. I always thought that it wasn't a game glitch, rather something put in to make the Computer pilots still able to fly a damaged plane. Anyway when I first started Multiplayer everyone was flying the Advanced flight mode, or AFM, with the ubers and such we gradually moved to the Normal Flight Mode or NFM. No more ubers, however flying in the NFM mode always made it seems too much like an arcade, no more engine torque, gun jams, or structural failure due to G-Forces. It was a steep learning curve but it forced us to re-learn the game all over again, and that's what made it fun.
Now people fly in pure Energy fighting tactics, no more "Just wait till he damages me and then I can win" If your caught low and slow, you pretty much have no chance depending on what airplane you are flying.
I also don't go to the Sierra sites anymore, since they dropped the support for the game I've been mad at them lol. Go to www.wings-of-valor.org and look under the files section. There are many, many, more there then Sierra has for this game.
