Dear all,
I came across this newspaper article dated March 15th, 1918. Does anyone have any more info. on this man?

Papers Past — Poverty Bay Herald — 2 May 1918 — "HAD MY ORDERS," SAID CAPTAIN OF SLAYERS. (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=PBH19180502.2.92)

Hi

I read the storry before but the name is wrongly written. His name was Aurel Graf Schreibler (http://www.frontflieger.de/3-s-f.html#schreibleraurel) ... though the 'Graf' ("Count") sounds strange.

He took part in the attack on Paris on 11./12. march 1918.

PS: It is really great to read those journal articles from during the war. ;)

I wonder whether this is a true story? I have checked two German casualty lists and find no mention of a Hauptmann Schoebler. Not even in the Ehren-Rangliste des ehemaligen Deutschen Heeres (listing most German officers on active duty during WW I).

The story might be Allied propaganda to offer another "example" of the "hun."

Until proved otherwise, I am suspicious of its authenticity.

Hi

His name should be spelled Scheibler, and he was Rittm dL KI (re-activated) from HR 13.

However, I dont have the date he was promoted Rittm, anyone who have that..?

Thanks, Gunnar. I found him in the Ehren-Rangliste as a member of Bogohl 2, killed on 12.3.18 at Chateau Thierry.

The Ehrenmal des preussischen Offizier-Corps (1939) also lists him as "Rittmeister a.D." but does not clarify his re-activated status, as the Ehren-Rangliste does.

Alas, no mention of him in Zickerick's list in Unsere Luftstreitkraefte, so no first name, date and place of birth.

But Haehnel's Ehrentafel lists Scheibler as "Lt.d.L." and buried in Chateau Thierry. Hmmmm . . . You might think such an old soldier's body would be sent home (wherever his was). Oops! He was in captivity, so no ticket home.

Unless there is some kind of research break-through, I think Rittmeister a.D. Scheibler of Bogohl 2 will remain another mystery for us.

I also have his first name as Aurel. Born 1888 but not a Graf. Leutnant in Husaren-Regiment Nr. 13 (19.6.08 Tt), he retired on 17 May 1910.

As the saying goes, this story becomes "curioser and curiouser."

Yes, Schreibler was not a Graf [Count], as he would (or should) have been named in the nobility casualty volume Ehrentafel der Kriegsopfer des Reichsdeutschen Adels 1914-1919 and he is not. Perhaps the aristocratic title confusion arises from the fact that the observer on that 12.3.18 flight was the aristocrat Ltn Peter Freiherr von und zu Mentzingen, who IS listed in the Ehrentafel der Kriegsopfer ...

Interestingly, the three crewman (of which Schreibler is identified as the pilot) are named among the dead in the chronological portion of Casualties of the German Air Service 1914-1920 by Franks, Bailey & Duiven -- but as a crew from BG1/Bs1, not BG2. Unfortunately, Schreibler's name and other information are not included in the first part of that volume, an alphabetized listing of "most" German air casualties of WW I.

Aurel Maximilian Carl Heinrich Scheibler

I dont understand why you are trying to change his name

His date of promotion to Lt differs three months from different sources, either 190608 as Glenn indicate but another source says 190308.

Anyway, he was promoted Oblt one month later then Krocker in spring 1915, and Krocker was promoted Hptm 160917.
So if there is a pattern here Scheibler ought to have been promoted Rittm 181017..
Anyone out there who have access to the MWB and can check..??

Dear all,
Many thanks to all those that have answered.
So his unit was either Bogohl 1 or Bogohl 2, and he was possibly an Oberleutnant or a Hauptmann at the time of his death. :D

I wonder if he was a member of a Kampfstaffeln before his service in BG 1 / 2?

It's good to have his full name. :)
Matt.

Hi,

to be precise : Scheibler was a Rittmeister (Captain of the Cavallery) and not a Hauptmann (Captain of the Infanty and other troups). In those days this was a difference... but 'in death they were all equal'.

Hmm,
"Captain of slayers"
""But, wretch, you have killed women and children" cried the general."

By Louis Raemakers ?

Hi again

Scheibler is also mentioned in Rick Duivens book Schlachtflieger. In 1917 he was apparently commander of Schusta 4.
