This has likely been asked before, but did any aircraft have drop tanks or the like? (Drop tanks meaning external fuel tanks somehow jettisonable from an aircraft)

I could be wrong but I don,t think anyone used drop tanks until WWII .

Concerning drop tanks pre-WW2 the Mitsubishi A5M used them, and I've seen pics of the Heinkel He51 with what appear to be drop tanks. Also some Curtiss P-6E have what appears to be auxiliary tanks, but whether or not they could be dropped I haven't a clue. Ransom
