I wonder if someone with access to this journal might help me. I believe it contained an article on Fl.Abt(A)221 and MIGHT have details or a photo relating to the downing on 24 July 1917 of 29 Squadron Nieuport 17 Serial B1546, piloted by AB Hill.

I knew Alan 'Brolga' Hill well and am trying to establish what his aircraft might have looked like. I've found a strange reference in the C&C index to this article to it having a 'dark fuselage'', whereas I have always thought it was silver doped, with the usual red 29 Squadron band marking.

Would be appreciative if someone could check what's in the article or indeed if any other information is known.

Many thanks, Mark

Hi Mate

Yes there is a photo (not best quality) of 2Lt AB Hill's Nieup 17 B1546 in German hands in the FAA 221 article in C&C US Vol 17 #2, p 146, and it does indeed appear to have a dark fuselage, with a white '3' just behind the cotpit. And in C&C Vol 17 #3 p 247 there is a photo of Hill standing with German aviators including Wolter & Classen who were credited with his downing, but correct me if I'm wrong, Hill was of the opinion that he was FTL due to a fuel pump failure?
