Researching story about Werner Voss and Mv Richthofen landing planes in a field not far from the Voss home. It was about a mile or less on a farm. They were given permission by the land owner to use the field. Has anyone heard this story. Would like to see if I can verify this one with another source. I have a description of the location, but I doubt after WWII that the land looks the same.

Rumor has it that Voss and MvR had a pretty good relationship. MvR was seeing his sister and they all used to hang out on the estate.

Ah, do you think they landed on the family property. Was there enough for them to land on?

While returning to the front from an extended leave,MvR stopped off at Crefeld to attend the funeral of Karl Emil Schaefer on June 9,1917. Voss had flown to Crefeld ( his hometown ) from the front to attend Schaefer's funeral. While in Crefeld,MvR visited Voss' family. When they flew back to the front,Voss' family came out to the field where they had landed to see them off.

The Autumn 1977 Cross and Cockade USA has a nice photo essay about this event.

Thank you.
You know I had a published author write to me stating that no one would have allowed pilots to land in any feilds during the war because the land was too precious and that I was very incorrect about them landing near the Voss home. I shall go and find this article. And you say a photo also! Cool!

From what I have read about this, MvR had a two-seater Albatros C-IX at his disposal which he also had painted red. Voss borrowed this plane on several occasions and flew it to his parents home.

Rittmeister, there is a photo of Voss in this plane with his parents and sisters standing in front of the plane. One of the two girls is very attractive - this must be Margret.

Really?!
Do you have scanning capabilities? You could email me the photo. Is the photo in a book that I can buy? Margret had dark hair, green eyes that were very playful, white skin like porcelein, hands like a china doll, and a playful alluring smile. She was very ladylike. Does this description fit the lady in the picture? Werner also had a cousin? I think Christina that also hung around and she had dark hair also and was fairly attractive. Margret had a more refined look about her than Christina.

Scanner at home is out of commission at the moment, but I will take the book to work and scan it to you tommorrow.
Photo is in another Walter Musciano book called 'Eagles of the Black Cross', an excellent book.

Thank you. I tried to find the Werner Voss book, you know the Teenage Ace one, to find more pictures and info. There is something about the title of that book that makes me want to create some kind superhero cartoon series. I can just see Werner making his way across Europe being a super flyer being chased by lots of teenage girl admirers. I think he would have liked that you know.
I don't think I have read any of Musciano's books. Is he an older writer like Gibbons or is he a more modern writer like Kilduff. Does he write strictly about aviation, Germans, or WWI in general?

Walter Musciano is probably in his late 70s--wrote a very large volume about aircraft carriers published by Schiffer a couple years ago. he was involved in designing escort carriers (CVEs) during WW II and still lives in the Eastern US, I believe. (Got a note from him c. 1997 but don't have the letter). His WV Teenage Ace booklet had a companion about Guynemer with the same type of family emphasis. You might try contacting him via Schiffer in Pennsylvania.

Rittmeister, Let me know by way of a post to this thread if you did not receive the Voss family picture. If not, I'll try to send it again before going back to work

Mark, I am at work right now, so I will have to check it when I get home. That won't be for a couple of hours. I hope that won't be an inconvience to you. I look forward to seeing that picture.

Mark,
I tried to open the file. All I got is machine language. I have Designer a graphic software that I could open a bmp with. I also have WordPerfect 8 that I could try and open another form with. Wanna try again?

Mark,
Thanks for the photo. I went home quickly just to see it. The woman on the far right in the white blouse is the same woman that is in the Kilduff book called Beyond the legend of the Red Baron. She is sitting directly behind Manfred pointing down at him playfully. I had always thought that she was Werner's cousin, Christina?. I wonder if she might be a half sister. There are reasons why I thought she was his cousin, which I won't get into at the moment. The woman on the far left could be Margret. In the Kilduff book, she is sitting next to Frau Voss while she is tickling the back of the neck of Manfred. I know there were photos of Margret and Manfred taken together, but alais none of them have surfaced. They were outdoor photos of them sitting on a grassy slope together. If anyone has anything that matches that description in an old photo album, please email me!

Thanks

Mark,
I have been corrected. The woman in the photo standing to the far right is the oldest sister, Katherina? And Christina, the cousin, is in the Kilduff picture that I mentioned earlier. And I believe that the far left female is Margret, but it doesn't do her justice.
