I am having trouble deciphering some German weather terms. Any assistance will be welcome.
They were used in the war diary of a naval zeppelin base during 1918.

Wetter: Beleuchtung 2. Aus Westen tiefere Wolkenbank heranziehend.
The problem term here is Beleuchtung 2, which basically translates to Lighting 2. As the time was just after sunrise I’m guessing it is a percieved or measured light level, possibly from a scale 0-10.
Wind: W.S.W. 1,5 doms.
The problem term here is doms. Clearly it is an indication of wind speed, possibly similar to the Beaufort Scale, but what does 1.5 doms convert to?

Cloud you please share a scan with the informations you mentioned?

When I read these words, the term "Beleuchtung" (illumination/lighting) sounds strange in connection with weather observation.

Hello Ian!

I received your e-mail and tried to find out more about the meteorological terms you've mentioned. Thank you.
^_^

Unfortunately, I found no corresponding data / meanings in connection with "Beleuchtung" and "doms". Maybe dedicated balloon or airship specialists will be more helpful...

Thanks Volker,

Beleuchtung is proving difficult to throw some light on... Sorry!

Doms however have been identified thanks to the Great War Forum.

In German coded messages, diaries, etc wind speeds were given in doms (Doppelte Meter pro Sekunde). Thus 1.5 double metres per second is 3 m/s.

... for helping me. At least the old code was still effective enough to confuse me.

Once decoded it becomes one of those "of course, why didn't I see that!' moments
