"Value" is a very hard thing to pin down and for the same object there is a "sell it to a dealer value", "a sell it on an on-line auction value", "a sell it to a desperate collector in a private sale value", and an "insurance value". The amounts will range from a low in the first example and then ever higher until you get to "insurance value" that will be anywhere between 2 to 10 times higher than the "sell it to a dealer value". And on top of this since these kinds of things do not sell in large quantities every week or month there is a big range of low to high prices within the same category of values. For example, in on-line direct auctions such as eBay and others I have seen these go from anywhere between about $500 and $1,500 on average with an outlier high of about $2,000. All of these examples were in perfect and complete condition. Yours is not so it would go for less since collectors want complete, all original, and perfect condition and people who want them for actual aircraft normally want them to be able to be certified as airworthy. I do not know where you might get spare parts other than to find another incomplete one and cannibalize it, though I suspect that may be what happened to yours. My only thought for a possible lead might be to contact the nice folks at http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/carl-bamberg-compass to see if they might be able to help you out.

Thank you for your reply.

Good thing. Only paid $40 for it :D

I have emailed that company twice and they have ignored me. Maybe they don't want my money.

Contact ulpilot on this form. I believe he made some or parts for others.

2nd vote for Vet / ulpilot in regards to acquiring a pretty accurate and functional gimbal and corrector magnet assembly.

BTW acquiring this for $40 would have been a bargain 40 years ago much less now. I have two Bamberg Armee Kompass III variants, one like yours. I wouldn't take less than 1500 for one. OTOH, I will happily offer you 10x what you paid. :)

Regards
John

Thanks for the reply

Do you have a photo of your compass?

Not a great photo, but the lower of the 2 is the same as yours. The glass has crud on the inside from the 100 year old fluid and I have yet to be able to free all of the screws to clean it. The brass casting has nicely bonded with the brass screws and 3 of them don't want to come loose. Anyone have suggestions, I'm eager to hear them.
The top compass is also branded Armee Kompass III and Carl Bamberg but has some extra features; the course indicating pointer and a 360° etched ring that covers the 6 retaining screws (removed in this photo).
