I think the only thing that makes this inoffical award interesting is the fact, that it looks like a black version of the "Blue Max". I'm sure that this "connection" was a planned one - such as the "Diebitsch-cross 1st class", worn in the same way as the PLM.

But it was not the only early post-WW1 German award:

Of course the meaning of this award's name is somewhat lost in translation, as it was never an actual 'knight's cross'.
