How was aerodrome vegetation kept short?

In playing with the static grass technique as a base for a model (SE5 at Colney, April 1917), it has occurred to me that I have no idea how aerodrome vegetation was kept at a reasonable length during the war. Mowing? If so, how? Herbivorous animals on bad flying days?

There were plenty of horses, mule even oxen around back then to keep the grass down. Feed for animals was in short supply in parts of the Central Powers.
