Hello, all...

Can anyone ID this critter-happy squadron? The officer on the far right is wearing RAF kit. I count six animals, which must be some kind of record. Someone told me the engine details were whited out by the censors, but surely the Germans had plenty SE5a parts to play with by this time...

It's 85 squadron mid 1918. Elliot White Springs is instantly recognisable and if you look around you will find several, if not all, pilots identified in various sources.
I agree that the censoring of the radiators is pretty pointless as the Germans were getting daily deliveries of SE5a's at the time.

I believe this is the famous Imperial War Museum collection print of Billy Bishops No. 85 RAF squadron at St. Omer, June 1918. The two famous U.S. Warbirds, Laurence Callahan (4th front row from left) and Elliott White Springs (5th front row) without helmets are enjoying their turn with the Sqd. McGrider is already dead I think?? Too busy to look him up right now. The German Shepard belongs to Digger Horn I think?? This is a poor print. Much better available out there I am thinking. Google it, FineArtAmerica.com?? Adios. :):)

Thanks for that.

Actually it's a superb silver gelatin period print, but the silver particles are showing lots of oxidation which make it hard to photograph. The acid paper is coffee brown.

Was Billy Bishop taking the picture? :(

For a copy one could try: www.PICRYL.com/media/airman stood directly behind the black goat is Walter Hunt Longton, etc. For a download/print. This is without the censored duping. :)

Which one? There's two.
