DSO to American J. E. McGovern

My grandfather received a DSO while flying in the French Air Service during WWI. I am currently trying to find the citation at the Public Record Office at Kew. I notice the Aerodrome indicates Clive Warman was the only American to receive the DSO during WWI. Does anyone know where this information on Warman came from? Thanks. Bill McGovern

A quick check of Creagh & Humphris "The DSO 1886-1923" reveals no McGovern's at all. It is possible that they somehow missed your relative, but equally, might not the award have been a French decoration as he was serving with them?

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know there was a book on DSO awards. Are there also books on the Military Cross and the Distinguished Conduct Medal? He also has these awards. Bill McGovern

I have been looking into awards and their citations for a number of years but have no record of a McGovern having received the DSO, MC or DCM.

A genuine DCM will be impressed in plain block capitals with the regimental or equivalent number, rank, initials, surname and unit of the recipient (unless it is one of the very early issues dating back to the 1880s - there wereissued blank). If the medal was awarded after september 1917, the recipient's home town will also be shown.
