Hello All,

I recall reading somewhere that German ground crewmen's work denims were black. I was wondering if anyone has any supporting info on this? Were they regular white work denims just dyed black to help hide stains? Were they purposely made this way at the factory? Is this just someones BS?

thanks for your help,

R. Ivansek

I am sorry that I don't have direct information
but your same question was raised about three
weeks ago. Several knowledgable folks addressed
it. Check the forum archives; I believe the post
concerned German ground crew.

Rick Ivansek:
The aircraft ground crew were issued black two piece work uniforms consisting of a long sleeved jacket about hip length and pants without cuffs.
the jacket had epaulets and a button collar. for an illustration, see "German Fighter Units 1914-May 1917." by Alex Imrie.page 32. Osprey/Airwar 13 1978. these were standard issue to the enlisted ranks in the German Air Force that served as aircraft ground crew and mechanics. I think they were cotton fabric, possibly linen. The standard field grey uniform was useed off duty and for parade.

Some more information:

You can get som more details from the book "Army Uniforms of World War 1" (Mollo/Turner) ISBN 0-7137-1928-1 which states:

Headdress a chako with black capband and red cap piping, field-grey "waffenrock" (same as most fighting units) with stand and fall collar and swedish cuffs.
